End of transition period

What happens next?

  • Northern Ireland

"The new Irish Protocol seeks to set out not a ‘backstop’ that will fall away when ‘alternative arrangements’ can be shown to deliver an invisible border in Ireland, but an entirely new future for Northern Ireland.

This will require a complex system of custom declarations for goods travelling from Great Britain to Northern Ireland, effectively creating ‘red’ channels and ‘green’ channels depending on the type and final destination of the goods.

Most significantly, the new protocol also contains a consent mechanism which would allow the Northern Ireland political parties to vote on whether to continue to remain in this specially aligned relationship with the EU."
