He sale of the property (the property is eventually acquired by the state in 1949)

The property remained in the possession of the Cook family for over three generations and was sold by Sir Francis Cook's great-grandson to Saúl Sáragga in 1946. Two years later the Portuguese state bought Montserrate after its wealth of contents had been auctioned.
