"The “God-guarded city” of Constantinople withstood no fewer than seventeen sieges between the time it was founded in 330 and the end of the twelfth century. [...] Then, at the start of the thirteenth century, the city finally fell - not to an attack from the land but from the sea, and not to the infidel but to a Christian army."

The gravestone of Enrico Dandolo, who lead the 4th Crusade, can be found in the Hagia Sophia right in front of the Deesis mosaic.
