"Michael VIII’s son and successor, Andronicus II, carried out important works to stabilize the external structure of the church. In 1317, when he learned from his engineers that the northern and eastern walls were dangerously weakened and would give way unless strengthened, he built pyramidal tower-buttresses to support the vaults at points of stress."
